Picking the right trade and category for your listing

8 Sept 2026 · 4 min read

GullyDirectory’s taxonomy has two layers: 27 broad trades — Construction, Health & Wellness, Legal & Accounting, and so on — and 256 specific categories underneath them. Every listing sits in exactly one of the specific ones. “Construction” is a trade a visitor browses; “Kitchen Construction,” “Interior Decorator” and “Electrician” are categories a listing actually belongs to. Getting this one field right matters more than almost anything else on your profile.

Why it matters this much

Every category and locality combination with at least three listings gets its own page — /bengaluru/indiranagar/electrician, say — and that page is what a search engine actually ranks. Your listing’s category decides which of those pages you show up on. File a kitchen contractor under the generic “Builder/General Contractor” instead of “Kitchen Construction” and you’re technically not wrong, but you’ve made yourself invisible to everyone specifically searching for kitchen work — which, for a kitchen contractor, is most of the actual demand.

How to pick well

Start from what a customer would type, not from how you’d describe your business at a networking event. “Interior Decorator” and “Architect” sound similar from the inside; a homeowner searching one or the other means something quite different by it. If more than one category plausibly fits, pick the one that’s closest to what pays the bills most often — the one where most of your actual enquiries would sit if you had to pick a single word for what you do.

Services fill in the rest

Category is the one broad answer; services are where the specifics live. A listing under “Kitchen Construction” that also lists “Modular Kitchen,” “False Ceiling” and “Wardrobe” as services shows up for each of those searches individually too, on their own pages, the same way the category itself does. Category answers “what kind of business is this”; services answer “what specifically do they do,” and a listing gets found by both.

Picking a category is a one-time decision when you add a new listing, but it isn’t locked forever — if an existing listing is filed wrong, write to us through contact and we’ll move it.
